David's Story: David is a five year old boy who is on the autism spectrum. His mother and father came to HAPPI Farm and explained that they were looking for fun therapeutic alternatives for David. They asked if Therapeutic Riding can help David with his focus, anxiety and muscle strength, since he fell a lot. During his first lesson, David cried and screamed the entire 30 minutes. His parents started singing to him and noticed it calmed him down, but still seemed anxious. Determined to help David, they came back the following week. David’s second ride was a little better. He became calm for about 10 minutes while his parents continued to sing. The next time, David’s parents convinced David to sing with them for about twenty minutes and we noticed he started to smile more. Each session, David showed an improvement and the crying eventually stopped. Now, he sings, talks, and enjoys the entire riding lesson. The parents said he even says the horse's and the instructor's name during the week and has been falling less. When David arrives, he is smiling and he says, “Hello” to everyone. David’s parents are so happy to see his amazing progress and so are we.
